For 75 years, Gladys Knight has walked onto stages and given audiences a voice they could recognize almost instantly.

Now, the legendary “Empress of Soul” has revealed that the next chapter of her life is going to look different.

At 82, Knight announced that she plans to begin stepping back from her demanding performance schedule, saying the decision came after “much soul searching.”

Rather than completely saying goodbye to music, Knight explained that she will be doing fewer performances as she begins what she described as the “next stage” of her career and life.

It is an emotional change for an artist whose relationship with audiences stretches back three quarters of a century.

Knight began performing when she was only a child and eventually became one of the most recognizable voices in American soul music. With Gladys Knight & the Pips, songs such as “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One of Us” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” became part of the soundtrack of generations.

But after decades spent traveling, recording and performing, Knight says she wants more of something that fame can never replace: time with the people she loves.

She revealed that she plans to spend more time working on projects with her husband, William McDowell, and visiting her grandchildren.

Knight also delivered a deeply personal thank-you to the fans who have remained beside her throughout her extraordinary journey, expressing gratitude for helping make the dreams she had as a little girl come true.

For longtime fans, the announcement may feel bittersweet.

It doesn’t mean Gladys Knight has disappeared, and it isn’t an official farewell from music. In fact, she made it clear that she still hopes to see fans “out and about and on the road.”

But something is changing.

After 75 remarkable years under the lights, Gladys Knight appears ready to make the stage a smaller part of her life — and family, personal projects and the moments away from the spotlight a much bigger one.
