Dolly Parton’s Cousin Reveals What Happened the Last Time He Saw Her — It Was Fittingly About Music

For decades, Dolly Parton’s life seemed larger than life — rhinestones, unforgettable songs, movies, Dollywood and a personality that could fill any room. But one of the newest memories shared by her family is striking because of how simple it was.

Dolly’s cousin and longtime musical collaborator Richie Owens recently opened up about the last time he saw her. According to Owens, their final in-person meeting was not built around a glamorous Hollywood event or a grand farewell. It centered on the thing that had connected them for so many years: music.

A Family Bond Built Around Music

Owens was more than a relative. He was part of Dolly’s musical world for years, and that makes his final memory of her especially fitting. Speaking after Dolly’s death, he recalled their last meeting while also sharing new details about the private way she wanted to be laid to rest.

That quiet approach was consistent with the contrast fans saw throughout Dolly’s life. She loved enormous hair, sparkling costumes and big stages, yet many of the most important parts of her personal life remained remarkably private.

The Goodbye Dolly Wanted

Owens explained that Dolly wanted her burial kept very small and quiet. Rather than a huge celebrity-filled farewell, she was laid to rest beside her husband, Carl Dean, with only a small number of family members present.

For fans who followed Dolly for generations, that detail feels particularly meaningful. Carl was the famously private man who stood beside her for nearly six decades while largely staying away from the spotlight. In the end, Dolly’s final resting place brought their story together once more.

And perhaps it is appropriate that one of her cousin’s last memories of her involved music. Long before the fame, awards and international recognition, music was at the center of Dolly Parton’s life — and according to the people who knew her best, it remained there until the end.
