Richard Gere, actor of Pretty Woman, is recovering from pneumonia that he contracted while on vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, on February 19. Gere, who was celebrating the 40th birthday of his wife Alejandra Silva, had a persistent cough that got worse when they got there.
He checked himself into a local hospital, where doctors diagnosed pneumonia and kept him overnight for antibiotic treatment. The following day, he was freed to complete his recuperation with his family.
Alejandra revealed that their household had been ill for a few weeks prior to the health scare. They have two young sons together and have been married since 2018. Gere is also father to his eldest son, Homer, from his previous marriage to Carey Lowell, while Alejandra has a son, Albert, from a prior marriage.
“After almost three weeks of everyone being sick in our family, today I finally feel much better!” Alejandra posted on Instagram on February 16.
She gave fans another update on February 19, telling them that Richard was getting well. He is feeling much better today and is on the mend! The worst has already passed,” she wrote alongside a photo of Gere wearing a face mask while out on a walk with their child.
She later shared a supportive message from actor Ray Negron, a longtime friend of Gere’s, who wished him a speedy recovery and sent his love to the family.
