What Happened to Gene Hackman in His Final Years — The Truth Was Heartbreaking

For decades, Gene Hackman was one of Hollywood’s most commanding stars, unforgettable in The French Connection, Unforgiven, Hoosiers and Superman. But after retiring from acting in the early 2000s, Hackman largely disappeared from Hollywood, choosing a quiet and intensely private life with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The full reality of his final years only became clear after the couple were found dead at their home in February 2025. Medical investigators revealed that the 95-year-old Hackman had advanced Alzheimer’s disease and serious heart problems. His wife Betsy, 65, had apparently died about a week before him from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease associated with infected rodents.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail came from New Mexico’s chief medical investigator. Because Hackman’s Alzheimer’s was so advanced, officials said it was quite possible he never realized his wife had died. Investigators found no indication that he contacted anyone for help after her death. Hackman ultimately died from heart disease, with Alzheimer’s listed as a significant contributing factor.

It was an extraordinarily sad ending for an actor who had spent decades appearing larger than life on screen. Hackman had deliberately traded Hollywood fame for privacy, writing novels and living quietly in New Mexico. Few fans could have imagined just how lonely and tragic the final chapter of his remarkable 95-year life would become.
