Michael Jackson’s Son Made a Rare Appearance — But What He Revealed About Seeing “Michael” Again Hit Hard

Prince Jackson doesn’t step into the spotlight nearly as often as his famous father once did.

But this weekend, Michael Jackson’s eldest son made a rare public appearance in Las Vegas — and the occasion couldn’t have been more personal.

Prince joined fans on August 29 at the Michael Jackson ONE show at Mandalay Bay, marking what would have been his father’s 68th birthday.

The 29-year-old stood alongside fans as they celebrated Michael, even joining the crowd in wishing his late father a happy birthday.

For Prince, however, Michael Jackson isn’t simply the legendary performer remembered through songs like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Thriller.”

He’s Dad.

Prince was only 12 years old when Michael died in 2009.

More than 17 years later, one experience connected to the 2026 movie Michael brought memories of his father rushing back in a way he apparently wasn’t prepared for.

Prince served as an executive producer on the film, which stars his cousin Jaafar Jackson as Michael.

But knowing his cousin was playing his father was one thing.

Actually seeing Jaafar transformed into Michael was something else entirely.

Prince later described the first time he saw Jaafar wearing Michael’s hair and makeup as an “emotional shock.”

The resemblance was apparently so powerful that, for a moment, Prince felt as though someone he hadn’t seen since childhood was standing in front of him again.

Prince said Jaafar had embodied his father and “brought him back in that moment.”

And then Prince revealed the detail that showed just how deeply it affected him.

He wanted to hug him.

Prince recalled struggling to maintain his composure and eventually telling Jaafar that he was proud of him — before stepping outside to get some air.

For audiences, Jaafar’s transformation may look like an extraordinary movie performance.

For Prince, it was something much more personal.

It was the face of the father he lost when he was still a boy suddenly appearing in front of him again.

Prince has continued finding ways to protect and celebrate Michael’s legacy.

At the Los Angeles premiere of Michael, he even wore a red armband made from fabric connected to the red corduroy shirts his father frequently wore when Prince was growing up.

Prince explained that when he remembered hugging his father as a child, that fabric was part of the memory.

Now another generation is discovering Michael Jackson through the movie, his recordings and celebrations like the one Prince attended in Las Vegas.

Prince said seeing younger people become exposed to his father’s music and message has been special for him.

For millions, Michael Jackson remains the King of Pop.

But behind the music, the moonwalk and the performances remembered around the world, Prince’s story offered a much simpler reminder.

Sometimes a son still just misses his dad.
