Dolly Parton First Walked Onto the Opry Stage at 13 — 67 Years Later, Who Walked Out to Honor Her Had Fans in Tears

For Dolly Parton, the Grand Ole Opry was never just another stage.

It was part of her story almost from the very beginning.

In 1959, a 13-year-old girl from East Tennessee stepped onto the legendary Opry stage after being introduced to the audience by Johnny Cash.

Her name was Dolly Parton.

She performed George Jones’ “You Gotta Be My Baby,” and the audience’s reaction offered an early glimpse of what was coming.

They called her back for three encores.

Dolly would eventually become one of the most recognizable entertainers in America, but she never forgot what that first night meant.

Sixty-seven years later, the Opry stage became the setting for another unforgettable Parton family moment.

This time, Dolly wasn’t the one walking out.

It was her niece, Jada Star.

On Saturday, August 29, the Grand Ole Opry dedicated its show to celebrating Dolly’s extraordinary life and legacy, just days after the country legend’s death at 80.

The house was sold out.

Country performers with connections to Dolly filled the evening with the songs and memories she left behind.

But one of the night’s most personal moments belonged to Jada.

She walked onto the same famous stage her aunt had first conquered as a teenager and performed “The Orchard,” a deeply personal song featured on the Parton family’s 2024 album Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables.

It wasn’t simply another Dolly cover.

It was a song connected directly to their family — performed by someone carrying the Parton name onto the Opry stage once again.

Jada had admitted before the performance that she was walking through a “fog of sadness.”

Still, she stepped onto the stage her aunt loved and sang.

Afterward, she offered the audience reassurance as the Parton family continued grieving alongside millions of Dolly’s fans.

The evening included Carly Pearce, Kathy Mattea, Molly Tuttle and other performers, while Jelly Roll made a surprise appearance as the artists came together for “9 to 5.”

Then came the final moment.

The performers stood together as archival video of Dolly appeared.

Her voice filled the Opry House one more time with “I Will Always Love You.”

For longtime fans, the symbolism was difficult to miss.

A 13-year-old Dolly Parton had once walked onto that stage with almost her entire future still ahead of her.

Sixty-seven years later, a member of her own family walked onto it to help celebrate everything Dolly became.

The little girl Johnny Cash introduced that night in 1959 had become an American icon.

And although Dolly was no longer physically standing beneath those Opry lights, the Parton family was there to make sure the music — and the memories — carried on.
