At 95, Tippi Hedren Reveals What Really Happened Behind the Scenes With Alfred Hitchcock

Tippi Hedren became an overnight Hollywood sensation when Alfred Hitchcock chose the former model to star in his 1963 classic The Birds. But decades later, Hedren revealed that behind one of Hollywood’s most famous director-actress partnerships was an experience she remembered very differently from what audiences saw on screen.

Hedren has alleged that Hitchcock became increasingly controlling and obsessed with her. In her memoir, she accused him of unwanted sexual advances and described an incident in which she says he grabbed her sexually. She also recalled the terrifying filming of The Birds, including days spent shooting the famous attack sequence with live birds.

Their relationship deteriorated further while making Marnie. Hedren said that after she rejected Hitchcock and demanded to escape their professional relationship, he threatened her career and used her contract to prevent her from accepting other roles. She later summarized the devastating effect simply: “He ruined my career but he didn’t ruin my life.”

Despite everything, Hedren has always acknowledged Hitchcock’s extraordinary talent as a filmmaker. She has described the complicated contradiction of being grateful for the opportunity he gave her while condemning his alleged behavior toward her. More than 60 years later, that tension remains one of the darkest and most debated behind-the-scenes stories from Hollywood’s golden era.
