For most of their lives, Diane Keaton’s children, Dexter and Duke, stayed far away from the Hollywood spotlight that surrounded their famous mother. Dexter revealed that she and Duke had gotten tattoos in memory of their mother. Dexter’s tattoo reads “La Di Da” alongside a small heart—a touching reference to one of Diane’s most recognizable moments in Annie Hall. Duke chose the words “Weird Old World,” another reference connected to the film.

For two people who had spent much of their lives outside the spotlight, sharing such a personal tribute offered fans a rare glimpse into their grief and the enormous place their mother still held in their lives.

The tribute became even more emotional months later when Dexter marked her first Mother’s Day without Diane. She shared treasured family photographs and wrote about missing her mother’s voice, hugs, presence, and the feeling of home she brought into her life.

Behind the Oscar-winning actress, fashion icon, and unforgettable star of The Godfather, Annie Hall, Father of the Bride and Something’s Gotta Give was simply “Mom” to Dexter and Duke.

And perhaps that’s what makes their private tribute so moving. They didn’t choose an elaborate Hollywood memorial. They chose something small and permanent—two reminders they could carry with them wherever life takes them.
