Dolly Parton, one of the most beloved entertainers in American history, has died at 80.

Parton died peacefully in Nashville on Tuesday, August 25, according to her publicist. Her family also announced the heartbreaking news, bringing an extraordinary career spanning more than six decades to a close.

Those words feel very different today.

Dolly may be gone, but the songs, laughter and kindness she gave generations of fans will ensure that she is never forgotten.
