Long before Dolly Parton became one of the most recognizable names in country music, she was simply one of 12 children growing up in the mountains of East Tennessee.

Born to Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Owens, Dolly shared her childhood with six brothers and five sisters: Willadeene, David, Coy “Denver,” Robert “Bobby” Jr., Stella, Cassie, Randy, Larry, Floyd, Freida and Rachel.

Money was scarce, and the Parton children grew up in a crowded home near the Smoky Mountains. But music was everywhere. Several of Dolly’s siblings would eventually sing, write songs or perform themselves.

The Parton Sisters

Willadeene Parton, the oldest sibling, largely stayed away from the entertainment spotlight and became an author, writing about the family’s Smoky Mountain memories.

Stella Parton followed Dolly into country music and built a recording career of her own.

Cassie Parton also sang, including performing with members of the family, while Freida Parton, Dolly’s younger sister, pursued music before later becoming involved in ministry.

Rachel Parton George, the youngest sibling and Freida’s twin, became both a singer and actress. Television fans may remember her from the sitcom 9 to 5.

The Parton Brothers

Not all of Dolly’s brothers wanted fame.

Robert “Bobby” Parton Jr. largely maintained a private life, as did older brothers David and Coy “Denver” Parton.

Others shared Dolly’s musical gifts. Randy Parton became a singer and musician and performed at Dollywood, while Floyd Parton was a songwriter who collaborated with Dolly.

The family also experienced painful losses. Dolly’s baby brother Larry died shortly after birth. Floyd died in 2018, Randy in 2021, David in 2024 and Coy “Denver” Parton in July 2026.

Following Dolly’s death in August 2026, six of her 11 siblings remained living: Willadeene, Bobby, Stella, Cassie, Freida and Rachel.

For all the fame Dolly eventually found, she never seemed to forget where her story began.

Before the rhinestones, hit records and Hollywood movies, there was a crowded Tennessee home filled with brothers, sisters, stories and music.

And when you look at the Parton family today, it’s easy to see that Dolly wasn’t the only remarkable talent to come out of those Smoky Mountains.
