For years, Hayden Panettiere had faced the pressures of growing up in Hollywood, personal struggles and intense public scrutiny.
But there was one loss she openly admitted she could never overcome: the sudden death of her younger brother, Jansen.
Jansen Panettiere died in February 2023 at only 28 years old. Hayden was his older sister, but their relationship went far beyond simply being siblings.
And when Hayden eventually found the strength to describe what losing him had done to her, her words were devastating.
“I Lost Half of My Soul”
Hayden and Jansen were extremely close.
In a deeply emotional 2024 interview, Hayden explained that Jansen was her only sibling and that she had always felt responsible for protecting him.
When he died, she said she felt as though she had lost “half of my soul.”
It wasn’t grief she believed would eventually disappear.
Hayden later made that painfully clear, saying she would always be heartbroken over Jansen and didn’t believe she would ever truly get over losing him.
Those comments carry an especially poignant weight today.
Jansen Was Only 28
Jansen’s death came suddenly.
Hayden and her parents, Lesley Vogel and Alan “Skip” Panettiere, later released a statement explaining that the medical examiner had determined Jansen died from cardiomegaly — an enlarged heart — combined with complications involving his aortic valve.
He was just 28.
Like his older sister, Jansen had pursued acting. He appeared in productions including Even Stevens, Racing Stripes and The Walking Dead.
The siblings even had opportunities to work together.
But away from Hollywood, Jansen developed another passion: art.
After his death, his paintings and artwork became another way for Hayden to remain connected to the brother she missed so deeply.
Hayden Said the Loss Changed Her
Jansen’s death didn’t simply leave Hayden grieving.
She said the experience changed her.
The actress acknowledged that she struggled deeply following the loss and described the heartbreak as something that remained with her regardless of how much time passed.
There was also a painful element of an older sister questioning whether she could have done more.
Hayden had spent years thinking of Jansen as someone she was supposed to protect.
Suddenly, he was gone.
She Continued Keeping Him Close
Even as the years passed, Hayden continued publicly remembering her brother.
On anniversaries and birthdays, she shared memories and photographs of Jansen.
Her grief also became part of the story she told in her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
She wasn’t pretending the loss had disappeared.
Instead, she seemed to be learning how to continue living while carrying it with her.
Her Words Feel Different Today
Hayden Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at 36 years old. Her cause of death has not yet been determined, and authorities have said they found no signs of foul play.
Only three years separated the deaths of Hayden and her younger brother.
That fact inevitably makes her earlier comments about Jansen difficult to read today.
But her words shouldn’t be interpreted as predicting what would eventually happen to her.
They reveal something much simpler and more human: how deeply one sister loved and missed her younger brother.
Hayden once said she would never get over losing Jansen.
She didn’t have to explain why.
Four words said almost everything:
“Half of my soul.”
