Liza Minnelli Breaks Her Silence About Dolly Parton — “It Can’t Be True”

Spread the love

Liza Minnelli has finally found the words to speak abut Dolly Parton.

But even for a woman who has spent more than six decades expressing herself through music, those words didn’t come easily.

The 80-year-old Cabaret legend shared an emotional tribute to her longtime friend following Dolly’s death.

And one sentence revealed just how difficult the news was for her to accept.

“No. It can’t be true.”

But Liza didn’t simply remember Dolly Parton the superstar.

She remembered the Dolly that existed when the cameras weren’t around.

“I Love Dolly”

Liza described Dolly’s death as devastating and reflected on a friendship that went far beyond two entertainment legends occasionally meeting at Hollywood events.

Their connection had been strengthened through people close to both women, including their former agent Sam Haskell and singer Michael Feinstein.

Over the years, Dolly and Liza encouraged each other.

And then Liza revealed something particularly touching.

When life became difficult for her, Dolly noticed.

“When I was in trouble?” Liza recalled.

“Dolly knew it.”

For fans accustomed to seeing Dolly’s enormous public personality — the rhinestones, jokes, towering blonde hair and unmistakable Tennessee voice — those few words reveal something quieter.

Dolly paid attention to her friends.

They Shared More Than Show Business

Their friendship also contained plenty of laughter.

Liza recalled attending each other’s concerts and sharing meals together.

And apparently, those dinners could become very interesting.

She jokingly said there was one thing she wasn’t going to reveal publicly:

the “spicy girl gossip” they shared over meals.

Whatever Dolly and Liza talked about at those tables will apparently remain between them.

And perhaps that’s exactly where those stories belong.

Two of America’s most recognizable entertainers could sit down together, leave the public personas behind for a while and simply be friends.

They Even Made Music Together

Their worlds crossed professionally as well.

In 2022, Michael Feinstein recorded Gershwin Country, an album that reimagined George and Ira Gershwin’s music with country artists.

Dolly joined Feinstein for “Love Is Here to Stay.”

Liza served as an executive producer on the project.

It became another connection between two women whose careers had begun in very different corners of American entertainment.

Dolly came from the mountains of East Tennessee.

Liza was Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli.

Yet somehow, their paths crossed.

And a genuine friendship grew.

Liza Couldn’t Find the Words

Near the end of her message, Liza admitted there was much more she wanted to say.

She simply couldn’t get it out.

Her throat and heart, she wrote, were “full.”

It’s an unusually vulnerable image of an entertainer famous for commanding some of the biggest stages in the world.

No orchestra.

No spotlight.

No carefully prepared farewell.

Just an old friend trying to process the fact that Dolly was gone.

And perhaps that’s why her tribute has resonated.

Because underneath the celebrity names and legendary careers was something incredibly ordinary.

One friend was missing another.

Liza Minnelli and Dolly Parton belonged to very different musical worlds.

One became synonymous with Broadway, Hollywood and “New York, New York.”

The other carried Tennessee country music around the world.

But away from the stage, they shared dinners, concerts, encouragement — and apparently some gossip that Liza intends to keep secret.

And now, like millions of Dolly’s fans, Liza is struggling with the same thought:

It just doesn’t seem possible.
