When Little House on the Prairie arrived in 1974, millions of viewers fell in love with the Ingalls family and the people of Walnut Grove. More than 50 years later, the series remains a powerful piece of television nostalgia.

Melissa Gilbert, who became famous as Laura “Half-Pint” Ingalls, continued acting and later served as president of the Screen Actors Guild. Melissa Sue Anderson continued working on screen before living a more private life, while Karen Grassle returned largely to her theater roots and later published a memoir. Alison Arngrim, unforgettable as Nellie Oleson, continued acting, performing comedy and appearing at Little House events.

Not everyone from Walnut Grove is still with us. Michael Landon, the beloved “Pa” Ingalls and a driving creative force behind the show, died in 1991 at just 54. But his work — and the series itself — continues to connect generations of viewers.

Seeing the surviving stars more than 50 years after it all began is a remarkable reminder of just how much time has passed since families first gathered around their televisions to visit Walnut Grove.
