Why Did Richard Gere Say Working With Louis Gossett Jr. Was Different?

When Richard Gere learned that Louis Gossett Jr. had passed away in March 2024 at 87, his reaction was deeply personal. He didn’t speak like a co-star offering polite praise. He spoke like someone who had been changed by working beside him.

On An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Gossett didn’t socialize on set. He stayed in character from the first day to the last, not out of distance, but discipline. Gere recalled that whenever Gossett entered a scene, the energy shifted. Lines felt heavier. Silence meant something. Everyone stood a little straighter.

Gossett’s Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley wasn’t loud or cruel. He was controlled, principled, and real. That authenticity came from decades of experience and an unwavering belief that acting deserved full commitment. Off camera, Gere said, Gossett was gentle, warm, even funny. The contrast made the performance unforgettable.

That role earned Gossett an Oscar, the first Black actor to win Best Supporting Actor. But for Gere, the true legacy wasn’t the award. It was the standard Gossett set — honesty, seriousness, and respect for the craft.

“He never treated acting casually,” Gere said.

And because of that, neither did anyone else around him.
