Taylor Swift has broken her silence following the loss of Dolly Parton, and the first words of her tribute capture what millions of fans are feeling.
“A world without Dolly doesn’t feel possible, real, or right,” Taylor said.
But Taylor’s message wasn’t only about grief.
She reflected on the extraordinary example Dolly set for generations of women who followed her into music — including Taylor herself.
Taylor remembered Dolly as someone who combined kindness with remarkable strength, describing her as a woman of both “true grace and true grit.”
She praised Dolly for standing up for her worth as an artist while never losing the compassion and generosity that made her beloved far beyond country music.
Taylor also remembered the songs Dolly gave the world and the millions of children’s books distributed through her Imagination Library.
For Taylor, Dolly wasn’t simply a legendary performer. She was someone younger women could look toward while still being encouraged to become themselves.
And Taylor ended her farewell with a deeply personal promise:
“Dolly, I’ll think of you each step of the way.”
Two generations of American music may have taken very different paths, but Taylor’s words make clear just how deeply Dolly’s example influenced those who came after her.
Her voice may be gone, but the path Dolly Parton created will be walked for generations.
