Fans of classic television are saying goodbye to a woman who helped make one of the wildest shows of the 1970s impossible to forget.

Jaye P. Morgan, the singer, actress and beloved celebrity judge on The Gong Show, has died at 94.

Morgan died Monday, August 24, while living in Castle Rock, Washington, according to her family. A cause of death has not been publicly announced.

For viewers who remember turning on The Gong Show during its original 1970s run, Morgan was much more than another celebrity sitting behind the judges’ table.

She was part of the chaos.

Hosted by the unforgettable Chuck Barris, The Gong Show brought amateur performers in front of celebrity judges for acts that ranged from genuinely talented to wonderfully bizarre. If a performance became too much, there was always that enormous gong waiting.

And Morgan fit perfectly into that unpredictable world.

Her quick wit, big personality and willingness to play along with the madness helped turn her into one of the show’s most memorable regulars between 1976 and 1978.

But younger viewers may not realize that Morgan had already enjoyed an impressive entertainment career long before The Gong Show.

Born Mary Margaret Morgan in Colorado in 1931, she began performing with her family before eventually becoming a successful singer. During the 1950s, she scored popular recordings including “That’s All I Want From You” and “The Longest Walk.”

She later became a familiar television personality, appearing on programs including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Merv Griffin Show.

But for an entire generation of television viewers, hearing the name Jaye P. Morgan will always bring back memories of that giant gong, outrageous performers and an era when daytime television wasn’t afraid to get a little strange.

Nearly 50 years later, The Gong Show remains a cult favorite—and Morgan remains an unforgettable part of what made it work.

Jaye P. Morgan was 94.

For fans who remember those crazy afternoons in front of the television, another piece of the 1970s is now gone.
