Long before Dolly Parton became one of country music’s biggest stars, she was simply one of 12 children growing up in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Dolly was the fourth child of Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton. The family included six boys and six girls, and music was part of everyday life in their modest home.

But what happened to the 11 brothers and sisters who shared Dolly’s childhood?

Some followed Dolly into entertainment

Several Parton siblings inherited the family’s musical talent.

Stella Parton built her own career as a country singer and songwriter. Randy Parton performed and recorded music, including working with Dolly. Floyd Parton became a songwriter, while youngest sister Rachel Parton George sang before becoming familiar to television audiences through the sitcom 9 to 5.

Other siblings—including Willadeene, David, Coy, Bobby and Cassie—generally lived much quieter lives away from Dolly’s level of fame. Willadeene also became an author and documented memories of the Parton family.

The family also endured painful losses

Dolly’s younger brother Larry Gerald Parton died only days after his birth in 1955, a loss Dolly remembered throughout her life.

In later years, the family said goodbye to several more siblings. Floyd died in 2018, Randy in 2021, David in 2024 and Coy in 2026.

Yet despite the very different paths their lives took, the Parton family remained an important part of Dolly’s story.
