For decades, fans have wondered how Priscilla Presley could walk away from Elvis Presley, one of the most famous men in the world. Now, Priscilla has made her feelings remarkably clear.
In her memoir Softly, As I Leave You, Priscilla explained that she didn’t leave because she stopped loving Elvis. She said she still loved him when she left, but after spending much of her young life inside his world, she realized she needed to discover a life and identity of her own.
Life at Graceland may have looked glamorous from the outside, but Priscilla described periods of loneliness, especially as Elvis toured and she cared for their daughter, Lisa Marie. Eventually, she concluded that things weren’t going to change.
Perhaps the most emotional part is that leaving didn’t erase their bond. Priscilla remained connected to Elvis and his family, and decades later she has continued helping preserve his extraordinary legacy.
