There’s a Reason Shelley Long Is Back on Fans’ Minds Today — And It Goes Way Back to Cheers

For millions of Cheers fans, Shelley Long was unforgettable as Diane Chambers. Her constant battles — and undeniable chemistry — with Ted Danson’s Sam Malone helped define the show’s first five seasons. Even the show’s creators have said Long was crucial to its early success.

Then, in 1987, Long did something that stunned viewers: she walked away from one of television’s biggest shows. Despite years of rumors about behind-the-scenes problems, Long’s stated reasons were much more personal. She wanted to devote more time to her family while also pursuing opportunities in movies and her production company.

And despite everything that followed, Long has repeatedly said she didn’t regret leaving. She later returned as Diane for the Cheers finale and also appeared again in the Frasier universe — ensuring that fans hadn’t completely seen the last of Diane Chambers.
