For Randy Travis fans, hearing that unmistakable baritone on a “new” country song once seemed almost impossible.

In July 2013, Travis suffered a devastating stroke that left him with aphasia and severely limited his ability to speak and sing.

But there was something waiting from long before that terrible day.

Randy’s voice had been preserved in recordings almost nobody had heard.

His longtime producer, Kyle Lehning, discovered a collection of unreleased recordings stored in a climate-controlled Los Angeles vault. Some dated back decades and had simply been set aside because they didn’t fit the albums Randy was making at the time.

Now those recordings have finally been opened.

On September 4, 2026, Travis released Same Old Way, a 12-song album assembled from previously unreleased recordings made across his career. Randy himself participated in selecting the material with Lehning and his wife, Mary.

And there’s one detail that makes the story even more intriguing.

When Mary first revealed the existence of the vault in July, she said there were many more recordings still inside than the ones chosen for this project.

So while Randy may no longer be able to walk into a studio and sing the way he once did, the voice millions fell in love with wasn’t completely lost.

Part of it had been waiting quietly in a vault for decades.

And after 13 years, fans are finally getting to hear some of what Randy left behind.
